Acne scarring can occur after a breakout of acne, where the skin has been deeply damaged. It appears as uneven skin texture, with areas that are noticeably raised or depressed.
Acne scarring happens when acne breakouts penetrate the skin deeply enough to damage the delicate tissues underneath the epidermis. The body produces collagen to try to repair the damage – but it’s not a perfect science, and too little or too much collagen can cause scarring.
Chances of scarring increase when the acne breakout is especially inflamed, when the acne isn’t treated quickly enough, and when acne is squeezed, popped or agitated.
Acne scarring can be very upsetting and embarrassing, but don’t worry – there are definitely things that can be done to help. Microneedling sessions and chemical peels can help reduce the appearance of scarring, and a regime of medical-grade skincare can prevent future acne breakouts that could lead to more scarring occurring.
