Acne is an incredibly common inflammatory skin condition. Most people associate it with the teenage years, but it can happen at any time in your life.
Because acne is so common, there is a lot of conflicting information about the best way to treat it – but it doesn’t need to be complicated! With realistic expectations and a consistent routine, it is likely that you will be able to control your acne symptoms the majority of the time.
It’s probably not a big surprise that acne is linked to our skin’s oil production. The hair follicles on our skin are attached to small sebaceous glands, which stop hair drying out by producing oily sebum. Too much sebum, combined with dead skin cells and usually harmless bacteria, can then block hair follicles. These blockages are the cause of both individual spots and acne.
Acne and spots can be frustrating, and often embarrassing, for many adults – but that doesn’t mean they can’t be treated!
The best way to manage acne is by reducing oil production, speeding up skin cell turnover, treating bacterial infection and reducing inflammation. This also helps to prevent acne scarring.
With the help of medical-grade skincare and professional treatments like chemical peels and microneedling, the appearance and occurrence of acne can be both managed and improved.
