Pigmentation can come in many forms – for example, as age spots or liver spots – and is a natural and very common skin condition. It appears as areas of darkened skin, which can affect any part of the body, but frequently occurs on prominent places like the face, neck and hands – making it a very unwanted skin condition! Melasma is another common type of pigmentation that is often seen during pregnancy and menopause.
Pigmentation is caused by excess production of melanin in the skin, which in turn can be caused by many things – including sun damage, scarring from acne, hormones and just the simple side effects of ageing.
Chemical peels and microneedling are both excellent treatments to remove that upper layer of damaged skin, allowing healthy and evenly textured skin to grow in its place. However, pigmentation can mainly be managed with a regular medical-grade skincare routine that is specifically tailored to the type of pigmentation you are suffering from.
