Teeth grinding, otherwise known as bruxism, is the unconscious clenching and rubbing together of your teeth. As well as being bad for your teeth, it can cause headaches, sensitive teeth and TMJ pain.
Teeth grinding often occurs during sleep, but can also happen unconsciously while you are awake. It has a number of potential causes, including stress and anxiety as well as an abnormal bite or crooked teeth.
There is no current recognised treatment for teeth grinding, and most commonly, mouthguards are recommended. However, mouthguards don’t get to the root of the problem causing the grinding, and just treat the symptoms. This is why muscle relaxant injections can be more effective, as they relax the muscles to relieve the tenseness that can cause clenching and grinding. These injections also have the added benefit of slimming your face – giving you a more feminine contour to your jawline!
